Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The MSOE baseball team struggled to get its offense going with just nine hits and two runs in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of St. Mary's Sunday in Florida.
The Raiders (0-3) dropped the first game to the Cardinals (2-0) 11-0 and put across a pair of runs in the second game, falling 9-2.
Senior Casey Magyar had the best day at the plate, collecting three hits and an RBI in five at-bats over the two games. Sophomore John Dzurka made his first collegiate start at shortstop in game two and went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
In the first game, SMU opened the game with a single, double and triple in the first three batters to jump out to a 3-0 lead and never look back. The Cardinals capped their scoring with another three-run inning in the seventh inning, putting their first five hitters on base to start the inning.
Senior Josh Kundinger (0-1) made the start and three five innings with three strikeouts and a walk. He allowed six runs on nine hits. Junior Noel Mrowiec and freshman Blake Campshure finished the game with an inning of work each.
Game two was scoreless for the first two innings, before either team got a hit. Magyar got the Raiders' first base hit to lead off the third inning, but was cancelled out on a double play. The Cardinals, on the other hand, had six-straight hitters reach safely in their half of the frame on their way to a five-run inning.
SMU added two more runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to open up a 9-0 lead.
MSOE got on the board in the seventh inning, as freshman Jimmy Carrington and Dzurka each collected singles. Senior Jake Roberts pushed across the first run with an RBI gound out and Magyar followed with a run-scoring single.
Freshman Ryan Newman (0-1) got the start on the mound, lasting four innings. Freshman Matt Melbye tossed a scoreless frame and freshman Trevor Symbal closed out the game with an inning of work.
The Raiders will go for their first win Monday when they take on Trine in a doubleheader.
