Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Brandon McCumber drove in the winning run and pitched the final two innings for the save as the MSOE baseball team defeated Edgewood 5-4 in the opening game of their doubleheader Saturday afternoon at The Rock Complex.
The Raiders (3-14, 1-1 NACC) also fought back from a 2-0 deficit in the second game, but could not hold off the Eagles (4-8, 1-1 NACC) in a 4-2 loss.
MSOE, which had trailed 4-2, tied the score with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Then, in the sixth, freshman Jimmy Carrington doubled with two outs. He then came around to score on McCumber's single to right field.
McCumber, who followed a solid start by senior Josh Kundinger (2-2) on the mound, took the ball and inning later and shut down Edgewood over the final two innings. He scattered a pair of hits and a walk, striking out two for the save.
The Raiders had taken the 2-0 lead in the opener with a pair of runs in the second inning on three-straight hits to start the frame. Junior Ryan Miller drove in the first run with a single to center field and sophomore Brad Schonder, who had doubled, scampered home on a wild pitch.
Back-to-back RBI hits in the Eagles in their next at-bat equaled the score. They then pulled ahead 4-2, tacking on single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Red & White wasted little time equaling the score, plating a pair of runs in their half of the fifth inning. Carrington led off with a single, junior Nick Jablonski was hit by a pitch, and Schonder reached on an error to load the bases with two outs. Junior Tyler Parisi then brought home two runs with a single to centerfield.
Kundinger, fresh off six shutout innings last Friday against Beloit, went seven innings on the mound. He worked around 10 hits and a pair of walks, allowing four runs. He struck out just one batter, but it came with a runner at third base in the fifth inning.
Game two was a pitcher's duel, tipped in Edgewood's favor over the first five innings. Erik Wendt did not allow a hit over the first five innings, and just one in 6.1 of work, to overshadow a tremendous start by freshman Michael Boehmer.
Boehmer allowed single runs in the third and fourth innings over seven innings of work. He allowed five hits and three walks, striking out one.
Facing a 2-0 deficit in the sixth, capitalized on EC mistakes to level the score. Sophomore Eric Kremers led off by reaching on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Ryan Newman then followed with the Raiders' first hit of the game to score Kremers.
Another Raider put runners on first and third in junior Tyler Doyle and Newman. Then, with two outs, Doyle stole second and drew the throw, allowing Newman to steal home and tie the game 2-2.
The rally was undone in the eighth inning, as Nick Lehner led off with a home run to right field to break the deadlock. Edgewood would then add an insurance run in the eighth for the final 4-2 score.
Newman (1-3) pitched the final two innings and suffered the loss, allowing three hits and striking out one.
MSOE returns to the diamond Sunday, playing at Aurora.
