Box Score 2 FRANKLIN, Wis. – The MSOE baseball team surrendered nine home runs over two games in dropping a pair of games to Concordia Chicago Sunday afternoon at The Rock Complex.
The Raiders (8-26, 5-15 NACC) closed out their conference season with a pair of lopsided losses at the hands of the Cougars (21-13, 13-3 NACC).
Four errors derailed MSOE in game one, which exploded into a 20-3 CUC victory thanks to 14 unearned runs. In the second game, Concordia won 22-2 on the strength of a 14-run seventh inning.
After a single run in the first, the Cougars scored five times in the second inning and once again in the third for a 7-0 lead. The game was broken open, as a lead-off error paved the way for an 11-run inning to blow the game open.
Senior Josh Kundinger (2-6) lasted 3.2 innings, surrendering 13 hits and 15 runs, but just four of them were earned. Freshman Matt Melbye allowed four runs in 2.1 innings, but just one team earned run, while freshman Nathan Sliefert closed out the game with one inning of work.
At the plate, senior Jake Roberts went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Junior Noel Mrowiec and freshman Trevor Symbal also doubled as the Raiders struck for a run in the sixth to avoid the shutout and two more in the seventh.
Sophomore Brad Schonder and freshman Blake Campshure drove in the runs for MSOE.
The Raiders scored first in game two, as freshman Ryan Newman led off the first with a triple and scored on a ground out by junior Tyler Doyle. The lead lasted until the fourth inning when the visitors tied the score on a single and took the lead on a two-run home run, the first of four home runs in the game.
CUC added onto its lead with three more runs in the fourth inning and made it 8-1 with two runs in the sixth.
The game was then put out of reach as 19 hitters came to the plate, scoring 14 runs on eight hits, three walks, four hit batters and an error.
The Raiders were not done, as Kundinger made a pinch-hit appearance in the seventh inning and hit a solo home run to left field. It was the first at bat of his career.
Senior Thomas Hartwick (0-7) got the start and allowed six runs in five innings. Sliefert allowed two runs in the sixth and three different pitchers took the mound during the seventh inning.
MSOE returns to the field Tuesday, hosting Elmhurst at The Rock in its final home game of the season.
