Box Score 2 BELOIT, Wis. – The MSOE baseball team led 5-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, but could not hold on in falling to Beloit, 10-5, in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at The Ballpark.
The Raiders (6-8) then found the Buccaneers' (6-3) pitching in game two stifling, managing just four hits in a 6-0 loss.
Sophomore Jimmy Carrington finished with two hits in each game, adding a pair of walks in the nightcap.
In game one, the team's traded runs with starting pitcher Garrett Willems doubling in a run for MSOE in the fourth and Beloit following suit in the fifth.
The Raiders broke open the game with four runs in the sixth inning to jump out to a 5-1 lead. Carrington opened the scoring with an RBI double and, two batters later, freshman Nick Gross laced a two-run double to right-centerfield. He moved up to third on an error and came around to score on a wild pitch.
BC pulled a run back in the bottom half of the frame, then overtook the Red & White with eight runs in the eighth inning. The first four batters of the inning reached base, with three scoring in that time on a wild pitch and a two-run double to tie the game at 5-5. The home team kept on hitting, tacking on five more runs with two walks, an RBI double and a two-run single to put the game out of reach.
Willems put together his best start of the season, going 5.1 innings. He worked around seven hits and two walks to allow just one earned run. Freshman Sam Crawford followed with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief, striking out two.
A pair of Buccaneer pitched combined on the four-hit shutout in game two. Meanwhile, at the plate, Beloit put together another big inning with five runs in the second. That would hold up as Luke Brennan (1-0) scattered two hits and five walks over five innings of work for the win. Colton Lopez struck out four over the final four innings, allowing two hits, to claim the save.
MSOE answered with junior Jacob Roley (1-2), who went six innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs. He struck out two and walked one. Junior Owen Burnikel finished the game off, allowing just one hit and one run over the final two innings.
The Raiders return to action Sunday, hosting Finlandia in their home-opener at The Rock Complex. First pitch in game one is scheduled for noon.
