Box Score 2 FRANKLIN, Wis. – The MSOE baseball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with a pair of losses to Edgewood Saturday afternoon at The Rock Complex.
The Raiders (13-13, 4-4 NACC) could not hold an early lead in dropping an 8-4 decision in game one. In the nightcap, the Eagles (10-14, 6-4 NACC) tossed a four-hit shutout in a 9-0 victory.
MSOE led briefly in the first game, scoring twice in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead in the game. Edgewood had struck for a run in the top half of the inning, but the Red & White started a rally with a single by sophomore Max Kemp to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, senior Tyler Doyle had a single of his own.
Sophomore Ryan Newman plated the first run on an RBI single through the left side. Two batters later, sophomore Garrett Willems singled to center field to put his team ahead.
The Eagles immediately reclaimed the lead at 3-2 on a two-run double in their next at bat and never looked back. They extended the lead to 5-2 in the sixth before sophomore Owen Burnikel pulled a run back with an RBI single.
MSOE threatened in its last at bat after EC had made it an 8-3 game with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning.
After a one-out error, Doyle singled and Newman made it 8-4 with an RBI fielder's choice. Sophomore Jimmy Carrington then singled and Willems loaded the bases with a walk. With the tying run at the plate and two outs, Edgewood got a strikeout to stifle the Red & White comeback efforts.
Willems (0-2) made the start on the mound with 4.1 innings of work. He struck out one, walked four and allowed three runs on six hits.
Sophomore Michael Boehmer (4-3) got off to a big start on the mound in game two, striking out six with one walk and no hits allowed through the first four innings. The Eagles got their first hit of the game to lead off the fifth and loaded the bases with no outs.
After a shallow fly ball and a line out, it looked like Boehmer would escape the inning, but back-to-back two-run singles broke open a scoreless game.
Boehmer went seven innings with seven strikeouts and gave up just those four runs on five hits and two walks.
Edgewood tallied three runs in the eighth inning before junior John Dzurka entered the game and pitched 1.2 innings of effective relief to end the game. He got four of his five outs via the strikeout and did not allow a hit. His only blemish was two unearned runs on a pair of errors in the ninth.
The Raiders will look to embark on a new winning streak when they return to the field Sunday at Marian.
