Box Score 2 FRANKLIN, Wis. – Sophomore Jimmy Carrington hit a grand slam and drove in seven runs in game two as the MSOE baseball team swept Wisconsin Lutheran in a NACC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at The Rock Complex.
The Raiders (17-14, 8-4 NACC) overcame a 2-0 deficit in game one to win 3-2, then scored 11 unanswered runs to hand the Warriors (11-18, 4-8 NACC) an 11-1 defeat in game two.
MSOE was limited to just one hit over the first four innings of game two and trailed 1-0, before breaking the game open with six runs in the fifth. There were two outs with runners at the corners when the rally started.
A walk loaded the bases and senior Tyler Doyle drove in the tying run with an infield single down the third base line. Sophomore Ryan Newman was then hit by a pitch to force in the go-ahead run. Carrington followed by hitting a 1-2 pitch to left field for a grand slam to make it 6-1.
Senior Casey Magyar led off the seventh inning with a triple and scored on Doyle's single through the right side. Newman then followed with a single and, after a wild pitch, the duo scored on Carrington's two-run double to the right field corner. He would score on senior Ryan Miller's single to left field to make it 10-1.
Fittingly, Carrington brought the game to an end with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to invoke the 10-run rule. Magyar singled and both Doyle and Newman walked to load the bases. Carrington's seventh RBI came on a deep fly ball to left field, scoring Magyar.
Overshadowed by the offensive onslaught was a strong pitching performance by junior Brandon McCumber (2-2). He scattered seven hits over eight innings, allowing just one run and no walks. He also did not walk a batter and struck out three as he needed just 91 pitched to navigate the game.
Pitching was at the forefront of game one, as the teams seemed locked in a pitcher's duel.
WLC drew first blood in the third inning with a two-run home run to right field to make it 2-0, but the lead did not last long.
In the bottom half of the inning as Magyar led off with a single. Two batters later, Newman singled and both runners moved into scoring position on a fly out. Sophomore Garrett Willems tied the game with a single up the middle.
Miller came around to score the winning run in the fourth inning, leading off with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved him up 90 feet and another Magyar single pushed him to third. Doyle followed with a deep fly ball to score Miller and make it 3-2.
The one-run lead was all junior Jacob Roley (5-2) would need. He did allow eight hits in eight innings, but pitched around the base runners to limit the Warriors to just the two runs. He struck out nine in the game with just one walk. Sophomore Michael Boehmer then came on to lock down the win with a scoreless ninth inning and one strikeout for his first collegiate save.
On Senior Day at The Rock, Magyar and Miller put together big days at the plate. Magyar ended with two hits in each game and scored four times, including three times in game two. Miller reached base five times on the day with three hits and a pair of walks.
The Raiders will put their four-game NACC winning streak on the line when they return to action Sunday with a doubleheader at Aurora.
