Box Score FRANKLIN, Wis. – The MSOE baseball team scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to hand Dominican a 15-5 loss in seven innings in what was to be the first game of a doubleheader on a rainy Saturday afternoon at The Rock Complex.
The Raiders (18-17, 9-6 NACC) led 5-0, but the Stars (15-20, 8-9 NACC) had actually tied the score with five runs in the top half of the fifth inning before the Red & White exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the frame.
Game two was postponed due to the continuing rainfall. A date is yet-to-be-determined.
MSOE sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning with nine hits and two walks, with eight runs coming after there were two outs.
Two singles and a walk loaded the bases early to start the frame. Sophomore Owen Burnikel then plated the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. Senior Ryan Miller followed with an RBI single. Two batters later, seniors Casey Magyar (two RBI) and Tyler Doyle followed with back-to-back doubles and sophomore Ryan Newman drove in another run with a single to make it 11-5.
After a pitching change, sophomore Jimmy Carrington hit a run-scoring double for his second hit of the inning and sophomore Garrett Williams plated him with a single. Freshman Nick Gross put an exclamation point on the inning with a two-run home run to center field to make it 15-5. It was his second hit of the inning, after a bunt single, and his first collegiate home run.
Sophomore Michael Boehmer (5-4) earned the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. He did run into trouble in the seventh as the Raiders looked to end the game early. A double and two walks loaded the bases with just one out. He then came back with a strikeout and Miller made a diving stop up the middle to get the final out at second base.
Seven different Red & White hitters collected two hits, while Doyle finished with three. He was one of six players with multiple RBIs, including three from Burnikel. Carrington and Willems also scored three runs each to lead six players with at least two runs scored.
The Raiders return to the field Sunday with two games at Concordia Wisconsin.
