Box Score 2 MEQUON, Wis. – The MSOE baseball team started it's first-ever NACC Tournament appearance with a victory over Concordia Wisconsin, 3-2, Thursday on the opening day of the tournament at Kapco Park.
The No. 5 seed Raiders (21-21) opened the day by taking down the No. 4 Falcons (23-18), but then fell to No. 1 Concordia Chicago 10-0 in the final game of the day. They continue on in the double-elimination tournament, playing No. 2 Benedictine Friday at 1 p.m.
In MSOE's first game, senior Tyler Doyle broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with a go-ahead two-run single. With one out, senior Ryan Miller singled and sophomore Max Kemp followed with a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third. Two batters later, Doyle dumped a two-run single into right field for a 3-1 Raider lead.
CUW would pull a run back in the sixth inning, but head coach Steve Sanfilippo pulled out all the stops to get the win.
Sophomore Michael Boehmer (6-5) got the start and allowed a pair of runs over six innings with four strikeouts to get the win. Junior Brandon McCumber then came on for two innings of scoreless relief. He allowed just a pair of hits and struck out two.
After a lead-off single in the ninth inning, Sanfilippo went to his bullpen for his No. 1 starter in junior Jacob Roley. Making his first relief appearance as a Raider, he came in and retired all three batters he faced, registering two strikeouts, to earn the save.
MSOE had jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the opening inning. Doyle led off the game with a walk and moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Jimmy Carrington then followed with a run-scoring single down the left field line.
The Falcons pulled that run back with a single score in the third inning.
It was all Concordia Chicago in game two, as the Cougars scored in each of the final six innings to capture the shutout victory in seven innings. MSOE was limited to three hits in the game, with Doyle collecting two.
The game one win was the first NACC Tournament victory in program history and gave the team a school record-tying 21 wins on the season (1980).
