Box Score 2 MEQUON, Wis. – Junior Brandon McCumber went 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead the MSOE baseball team into the NACC Championship game with a come-from-behind 8-6 victory over Aurora Saturday afternoon at Kapco Park.
The Raiders' (24-22) epic run through its inaugural NACC Tournament appearance came to an end in the championship game, 5-1, against top-seeded Concordia Chicago (32-11), which won its fourth-straight tournament crown.
MSOE trailed 6-2 heading into the eighth inning, scoring six runs to overtake Aurora and claim the dramatic victory.
McCumber had two hits in the decisive eighth inning, leading off with a single and driving in the go-ahead runs with a two-run single. A walk and single loaded the bases with one out before senior Nick Jablonski had a pinch-hit, RBI single to get the scoring started.
The Raiders then drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks and pushed in another run on a hit batter to tie the game at 6-6. After a strikeout, McCumber lined a single up the middle and just past the outstretched glove of the shortstop to plate two runs and make it 8-6.
Aurora had scored twice in the eighth inning to open a four-run lead, but junior John Dzurka induced a bases-loaded double play to the first batter he faced to kill the rally. He then picked up his first collegiate pitching win with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
McCumber's first two hits erased one-run deficits following AU runs in the first and fifth innings, making it 2-2 heading to the sixth. The Spartans added single runs in the sixth and seventh runs, as well, before expanding their lead with a two-run eighth.
In addition to McCumber's big game at the plate, senior Tyler Doyle also collected two hits and scored twice. His two hits gave him the school record for most hits in a season with 68.
Sophomore Garrett Willems (0-4) got the start on the mound in the title game did what he could against the Cougars, going the distance and allowing just three earned runs on nine hits over eight innings. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.
Unfortunately, the Raider offense was unable to get going against the CUC pitching staff. The Red & White knocked out seven hits, but left nine runners on base in the game. Sophomore Ryan Newman led the charge with three hits.
Concordia Chicago got the scoring started with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning, then added an insurance run in the third inning and two more in the seventh to make it 5-0.
MSOE looked like it would capture eighth-inning magic for the second-straight game, pushing a run across in the inning and loading the bases with just one out. It would be the team's lone run in the frame after a strikeout and ground out ended the threat.
Doyle started things off with a lead-off walk and sophomore Jimmy Carrington followed with a single. McCumber then came up with another RBI, singling in Doyle. Newman followed suit with a single to load the bases.
The Raiders' appearance in the NACC Championship game made them the first conference team to even play six games in one tournament, while the team also became the fifth MSOE program to appear in its league title contest in the 2015-16 school year (men's and women's soccer, men's basketball and men's volleyball).
The season comes to an end with a school-record 24 wins and the program's first winning season since 1983 (12-10).
