Baseball Suffers Setback at Wisconsin Lutheran

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE baseball team was handed a pair of defeats at the hands of Wisconsin Lutheran Saturday afternoon at Neumann Family Field.

The Raiders (16-13, 7-5 NACC) fell into a 5-0 hole after one inning in game one and could not recover in a 10-2 loss. Then, the Warriors (12-16, 4-8 NACC) held them off for a 6-4 decision to complete the sweep.

After allowing an early outburst, which included here unearned runs, MSOE settled down in game one and kept the home team off the scoreboard again until late.

In the meantime, the offense struggled to get a foothold before pulling back a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Junior Jimmy Carrington hit a one-out single and sophomore Nick Gross followed with a double to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Junior Garrett Willems then plated both runners with a single down the right field line to make it 5-2.

WLC would add to its lead with a two-run seventh inning and three more runs in the eighth to effectively put the game out of reach.

Willems finished with a pair of hits to pace the offense in the opener.

Senior Jacob Roley (2-3) got the start on the mound and went 6.0 innings. He was charged with four earned runs and struck out five without issuing a walk. Freshman Nathan Tremore pitched the final 2.0 innings.

In game two, the score was tied after seven innings when the Warriors broke the tie with a two-run eighth inning. A hit batter, stolen base, and error put the go-ahead run on third base in Gunner Amelunk with one out. He then came into score on Jake Schwall's bunt single. KJ Banse then tacked on an insurance run with a double to the gap in right-center field.

The home team was then able to hold on with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning.

The Raiders found more offense in the second game but could not break through for a big inning. They were limited to single runs scattered over four different frames.

They did score first, opening the scoring in the top of the third inning. A lead-off error put freshman D.J. Ellifson on second base. He then moved up on a balk and scored on an infield single by junior Ryan Newman.

The Warriors retaliated in the bottom half of the inning with four runs.

MSOE worked away at the 4-1 deficit, capitalizing on junior Max Kemp's lead-off double in the fifth. Senior Brandon McCumber plated that run on a fielder's choice. In the sixth inning, Willems followed an error with a RBI double to make it a 4-3 game. The Red & White threatened for more but an inning-ending double play preserved the lead.

The Raiders tied the game in the seventh inning, as Ellifson led off with a single and took third on an error during a subsequent sacrifice bunt attempt. Newman then tied the game with a single. After a pitching change, the new hurler retired the next two hitters before hitting a batter to load the bases. He then buckled down and got a strikeout to snuff out another MSOE threat.

Junior Michael Boehmer got the start on the mound and look strong outside of the one bad inning. He tossed 6.0 innings and struck out seven. Three more pitchers completed the game with sophomore Sam Crawford absorbing the loss during his 1.1 innings of relief.

Ellifson led the charge with three hits and two runs scored. Newman kept hitting for MSOE, extending his hitting streak to 17-straight games with a hit in game one and a 2-for-5 effort with two RBIs in game two.

The Raiders will look to return to their winning ways Sunday, hosting Aurora for two games at The Rock. First pitch is at noon.
