Crawford Highlights Pitcher's Duel in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUBURNDALE, Florida – Junior Sam Crawford did not allow a hit for the first six innings of his start for the MSOE baseball team as it fell in a pair of games against St. Mary's (Minn.) Monday in Florida.

The Raiders (0-3) fell to the Cardinals (2-2) 9-1 in game one before SMU held out for a 2-0 win in 10 innings in game two.

Crawford's game two start was the highlight of the day, as he went 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts and did not allow a hit until the lead-off batter of the seventh inning. He allowed just the one hit and walked two hitters.

MSOE did not allow an earned run through 10 innings in the second game, as sophomore Nathan Tremore threw 2.0 innings of relief. He surrendered two hits and a walk while striking out three.

Junior Matt Mohapp (0-1) threw the 10th inning, striking out two and allowing a pair of base-runners after a two-out error extended the inning.

The Raiders' loaded the bases in the ninth inning with just one out. Senior Ryan Newman led off with a double and senior Jimmy Carrington was intentionally walked. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners up, senior Owen Burnikel was walked intentionally to load the bases. SMU came back to get a fielder's choice out at the plate and a ground ball to third base to escape the threat.

It was a true pitcher's duel as MSOE outhit St. Mary's 6-4 through 10 innings. Senior Max Kemp finished with two hits for the Red & White.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings in game one.

The Raiders nearly rallied in the fifth inning, loading the bases with just one out. After a pitching change, the new hurler induced a 6-4-3 double play to escape. SMU expanded its lead with three more runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to put the game out reach.

An error and a single to open the seventh inning set up the MSOE offense to get on the board. Two batters later, Carrington plated the team's lone run with an RBI groundout.

Freshman Caleb Willert (0-1) started game one, throwing 4.1 innings in his collegiate debut. He struck out six. Freshman Noah Davison tossed 0.1 innings and freshman Cole Raines finished up the game with a hitless inning and one strikeout.

Newman reached base three times in the game with a hit and two walks.

MSOE's Florida trip continues Tuesday with a doubleheader against Hanover. First pitch of game one is at 10:30 a.m. central time.
