Box Score RIVER FALLS, Wis. – Juniors Brandon Unser and Cole Larson each scored goals to send the MSOE hockey team to a 2-1 victory over No. 13 UW-River Falls Saturday evening on the road.
The Raiders (3-3) quickly overcame an early 1-0 deficit by the Falcons (3-3-1) to post their second win of the season over a ranked team.
The Falcons struck first, as Mitch Kontny opened the game's scoring at 5:23 of the first period.
The home team's lead was short lived as defenseman Larson lit the lamp for his first collegiate goal just 1:18 later. His goal equalized for MSOE at 6:42 came off assists from juniors Cody Ganchar and Gage Christianson.
Unser put the Raiders ahead late in the second period, scoring his second goal of the season. He struck at 15:03 on a delayed penalty, giving MSOE the extra attacker. He was assisted by sophomore Christian Elsborg.
UWRF held a 25-20 shot advantage in the game, including 8-4 in the third period as it fought for an equalizer. The Raider defense held strong in front of senior goalie Nick Kohn. The Falcons pulled their goalie in the final minute of regulation, but were limited to just two blocked shots.
Kohn continued the strong start to his senior campaign, making 24 saves in the game. He increased his save percentage to .940 on the season and lowered his goals against average to 1.71.
Tanner Milliron made 18 saves in the game for River Falls.
This was MSOE's first-ever win over UWRF in seven all-time meetings. It was also the team's third-straight win over a Wisconsin state school after road wins at UW-Stout and UW-Superior this past January.
The Raiders return to the ice Tuesday, Dec. 8, at UW-Stout.
