Box Score MILWAUKEE – UW-River Falls scored three goals in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and pull away from the MSOE hockey team in a 5-2 contest Saturday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (2-4-2) tied the game on two different occasions, but did not have any fire power remaining as the Falcons (2-6-1) finished the game strong.
Junior Clint Garris scored the first equalizer, cancelling out a UWRF goal at 3:54 of the first quarter with a power play score of his own at 7:55. Junior Jerad Tafoya and sophomore Matthew Romund set up the goal.
The second period followed a similar script, as the visitors once again jumped ahead early in the frame. This time, it was a power play goal at 5:57 to make it 2-1. Tafoya then lit the lamp with another Raiders power play goal at 16:42 to tie the game heading into the decisive third period. Senior Gage Christianson and junior James Ring had a hand in the second equalizer.
River Falls capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play to take the lead for good, this time 5:41 into the third period. The team then struck for a pair of insurance goals at 12:53 and 15:31 to put the game away.
The Falcons held a 41-23 shot advantage and scored on 2-of-7 power plays. MSOE also capitalized on two different man advantages, but had nine on the night.
Junior Zach Woodman made 36 saves in goal for the Raiders. Zach Quinn stopped 21 shots for UWRF.
MSOE returns to the ice Tuesday in a rare mid-week afternoon game. It hosts St. Mary's at 2 p.m. at the Kern Center.
