Kroll Leads Raiders Back Against Lakeland

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Senior Megan Kroll had 22 points, 14 rebounds and hit the go-ahead free throws in the final seconds to send the MSOE women's basketball team to its 10th-straight win, 68-65 over Lakeland Wednesday evening at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (10-4, 8-1 NACC) trailed the Muskies (6-8, 5-4 NACC) for much of the game, but held the visitors without a field goal over the final 5:36 of the game to secure the comeback victory.

Kroll finished 11-for-12 from the free throw line and scored the final seven points of the game for MSOE. Junior Holly Denfeld was the focus of the visitor's halfcourt defense and finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Junior Lizzy Hilby also scored 11 points and junior Margaret Pugh 10 to join the duo in double-figures. Freshman Brooke Scott added a hard-fought nine points off the bench.

Bailey Gravold led LC with 16 points. Rachel Stankevich scored 13, while Kayla Clark and Trista Barron finished with 11 points each.

MSOE trailed by eight at 63-55 with 5:36 remaining in the game before mounting a comeback and closing the game on a 13-2 run. The Raiders surpassed the Muskies on two Kroll free throws with 20.2 seconds remaining.

Lakeland had two attempts for the go-ahead basket go off the mark in the final seconds, then Pugh forced a turnover on an inbounds with six seconds on the clock. Kroll came away with the ball and went back to the line. After she made two more free throws, Clark's game-tying three-point attempt at the buzzer was just off the mark.

The Raider offense struggled to get its footing in the first quarter as the visitors built an 18-12 lead after the first 10 minutes. That deficit rose to 20-12 after the first basket of the second period before an 8-1 Red & White run made it 21-19.

LC pushed its lead back up to nine at 28-19 with seven-straight points, but the Raiders were good for another run, this time 12-5, to pull back within two at 33-31. The Muskies would go into halftime with a 37-33 lead.

Lakeland looked good early on its attempt to stop Denfeld, but Kroll took the lead for MSOE in the first half. She finished the half with 15 points and eight rebounds. Denfeld scored just five first-half points, but notched four assists in the frame.

MSOE looked to half figured out the Lakeland defense to start the second half, opening on a 13-7 run to take a 46-44 lead on a Hilby three. Denfeld scored six points in the stretch to get going, offensively, while Hilby provided the other seven.

After some back and forth, the Red & White led 49-48 when the Muskies forced three-straight turnovers to end the third quarter and finished the frame with the nine-straight points in the final 39 seconds.

The Red & White shot 46 percent from the field on the night, but had to overcome 26 turnovers. MSOE drained 6-of-9 three-point attempts and was 16-for-20 at the free throw line. Lakeland, on the other hand, shot 39 percent for the game, converting on just 4-of-18 three-pointers and 15-of-22 free throws.

The Raiders return to the court Saturday at Concordia Chicago.
