Women's Basketball Falls Short at Lakeland 61-57

Box Score

SHEBOYGAN, Wisconsin – Sophomore Jamie Spanbauer scored a career-best 22 points and senior Holly Denfeld posted another double-double as the MSOE women's basketball team fell to Lakeland 61-57 Wednesday evening at Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Raiders (7-6, 4-4 NACC) and Muskies (9-5, 7-2 NACC) were tied at 54-54 with 22 seconds remaining, but a three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining proved to be too much of a deficit to overcome.

Spanbauer shot 6-for-11 from the field in the game, including 5-of-9 from three-point range. Denfeld scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her fourth-straight double-double and seventh in eight games.

Three starters scored in double-digits for Lakeland, led by 15 points each from Bailey Grayvold and Rachel Stankevich, who added 11 boards. Miranda Jacobson added 13 points.

The teams were tied at 40-40 entering the fourth quarter and four more times throughout the frame. Senior Margaret Pugh hit a layup with 22 seconds remaining to tie the game at 54-54. Unfortunately, Kayla Clark hit a three-pointer on the ensuing possession for a three-point lead.

The Muskies then fouled Spanbauer with seven seconds remaining, taking the ball out of MSOE's hottest shooter on the night. After a pair of free throws by Lakeland, Spanbauer was fouled again, this time with three seconds to go, eliminating the chance of a game-tying three-pointer. She missed her second attempt, but the home team came down with the rebound to clinch the game.

The Raiders shot 39.1 percent for the game and hit on 7-of-17 attempts from three-point range. They also got to the free throw line 19 times, converting 14. LU shot 41.1 percent from the field on the night, making five of its 10 three-point attempts, and going 10-for-14 at the free throw line.

MSOE returns to the court Saturday, hosting Concordia Chicago at 2 p.m.
