Baseball Plays 25 Innings in Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MAUSTON, Wisconsin – The MSOE baseball team played games of 11 innings and 14 innings in splitting a doubleheader with Beloit Saturday afternoon at the Woodside Complex.

Junior Max Kemp hit a walk-off single in the 11th inning to give the Raiders (3-7) a 7-6 win in game one. The Buccaneers (3-7) then struck for a pair of runs in the top of the 14th inning of game two to salvage the split, 7-5.

In game one, MSOE put the potential game-winning run in scoring position in the ninth, 10th, and 11th innings before Kemp came up with a walk-off base hit. The inning started with a lead-off walk and junior Garrett Willems singled two batters later. Junior Owen Burnikel followed with a single up the middle only to see Beloit throw out a would-be winning run at the plate.

Kemp then followed with a single to right field to score the winning run from second base.

Beloit had jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a run in the first inning, three in the second, and another score in the third.

The Raiders responded with a six-run third inning to jump into the lead.

The first four Red & White hitters reached base safely with sophomore Nick Gross doubling in the first run and junior Jimmy Carrington following with a RBI single. Gross then scored when Carrington ventured off first and was caught in a run-down, making it 5-3.

After an out, a single and walk got the rally re-ignited. Burnikel then drove in two runs with a double to left field to tie the score. He then scored when Kemp followed with a single of his own.

The Buccaneers tied the game in the top of the fourth, setting the deadlock that lasting into extra innings.

Kemp was one of three Raiders with three hits in the opener, driving in two runs and the game-winner. Senior Brandon McCumber and sophomore Nick Gross also collected three hits each. Burnikel had a pair of hits and drove in two runs while junior Matt Melbye also had a pair of base hits.

Sophomore Sam Crawford (1-1) turned in a stellar 7.1-inning relief appearance to pick up the win in the opener. He kept the Bucs off the board and struck out four with just one walk. He scattered four hits after entering in the fourth inning with the game tied at 6-6.

After knocking out 17 hits in game one, MSOE tallied 16 hits in game two. Sophomore Andres Oselio went 5-for-6 in the game and Burnikel finished with three more hits for his third-straight multi-hit game. The top three hitters in the lineup, McCumber, Gross, and Carrington had two hits each.

On the mound, McCumber (0-2) threw the final two innings and absorbed the loss. Junior Brandon Rankila got the start on the mound and surrendered three earned runs over 6.0 innings with four strikeouts. Freshman Justin Celeski then hurled 6.0 scoreless innings, scattering five hits with a pair of punchouts to get the Red & White through the 12th inning.

The teams traded blows in the second game, with Beloit once again scoring first. The visitors tallied two runs in the third inning and the Raiders answered with a pair in the fourth. The teams then each scored once in the fifth and twice in the seventh to remain deadlocked.

The Raiders stay in Mauston to take on Finlandia in a pair of games Sunday. First pitch in game one is set for 11 a.m.
