Box Score 2 RIVER FOREST, Illinois – The MSOE baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Concordia Chicago Sunday afternoon at CUC Baseball Field.
The Raiders (8-10, 1-3 NACC) scored first in the opener but could not hold off the Cougars (12-9, 4-0 NACC) in a couple big innings, falling 8-2. Then, in game two, they trailed 13-1 before a seven-run seventh inning and another run in the eighth to get a second wind before falling 14-9.
CUC put up crooked numbers in each of the first three innings of game two in opening a quick 10-1 lead. The home team then had another three-run frame in the sixth.
Sophomore Isaac Narimatsu got MSOE's big inning started with a one-out single and was on second with two outs before the action got into gear. He scored on senior Brandon McCumber's single, the first of four-straight for the Red & White, resulting in another run.
A Cougar error followed and set up junior Garrett Willems' two-run single up the middle. Sophomore Andres Oselio followed with another two-run single to cut the deficit to 13-8. The Raiders logged seven hits in the inning and had 10 hitters come to the plate.
Freshman DJ Ellifson then doubled to lead off the eighth inning and tacked on another run when he scored two batters later on junior Ryan Newman's ground out.
Despite the late surge, Concordia would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning and hold on to earn the sweep.
MSOE got hits from every position in the batting order, with McCumber, Willems, Ellifson, and sophomore Nick Gross collecting two hits each.
McCumber (0-3) got the start on the mound and threw one inning. Four other Raider pitchers saw action in the game.
Willems also collected a pair of hits in game one, as did junior Jimmy Carrington. The two combined on the opening run of the game in the fourth inning. Carrington had singled to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a wild pitch and fly out. Willems then plated him with a two-out single.
The Cougars countered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to take the lead. They then tacked on a run in fifth inning for a 4-1 lead.
Newman led off the sixth inning with a home run to left to pull back another run for the Raiders. It looked as though they'd be able to add to it as Carrington and Willems each singled to put runners at the corners with two outs. Unfortunately, CUC got the strikeout it needed to limit the damage.
The Cougars then put up four more runs in the eighth inning to effectively put the game out of reach.
Junior Brandon Rankila (0-1) suffered the loss with 3.1 innings of work. The bullpen covered the rest of the game with work from four other hurlers.
The Raiders are back in action with a doubleheader next Sunday at Lakeland.
