Box Score 2 VERONA, Wisconsin – Senior Shannon Curtis and sophomore Liz Gale each threw shutouts for the MSOE softball team as it swept Edgewood in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Ceniti Park.
The Raiders (25-9, 13-4 NACC) beat the Eagles (4-30, 1-17 NACC) 3-0 in 10 innings in game one and 7-0 in game two to tie and surpass the program record for wins in a season (24), which was set in 1997 and tied in 2014.
Senior Shannon Curtis (15-6) was unbeatable in throwing a 10-inning shutout and striking out a league-record 18. It was the second 10-plus inning shutout of the season for her. She retired the first 14 hitters she faced in the game.
MSOE had seven hits through the first nine innings but could not get anything going until the 10th inning. Back-to-back errors to lead off the inning put runners on first and second and sophomore Emily Snow followed with a two-run triple. Two batters later, Snow scored on a suicide squeeze attempt by junior Caitlyn Moran
Curtis then closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. She struck out five of the last six batters she faced.
Gale (6-2) followed Curtis' lead and limited the Eagles to just three hits in game two. She struck out a season-high five and allowed just one base runner, via an error, over the last 4.2 innings.
The Raiders got on the board in the second inning, generating a pair of runs. Moran hit a one-out triple and freshman Kim White followed with a walk. She immediately headed to second to draw a throw and Edgewood conceded the base to prevent Moran scoring from third. A wild pitch, however, brought Moran home. White then score on senior Kailey Smith's single up the middle.
Sophomore Emma Megal tacked on another run with a one-out home run in the third inning and back-to-back two-out doubles by Snow and freshman Amanda Manssen in the fifth inning brought in a couple more runs to make it 5-0.
MSOE finished the game off with two more runs in the seventh inning. Sophomore Rachel Ziemba hit a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Megal. Snow then followed with another double and scored on a Manssen single to center field.
Manssen finished with three hits in game two while Snow tallied a pair of doubles to break the NACC single-season record with 18. She also extended her streak of reaching base safely to 31 games, fourth-best stretch in league history and three away from the No. 1 spot.
The Raiders take a break from league play when they return to action Wednesday. They host Mount Mary in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
