Lacrosse Holds off North Central in 9-8 Thriller

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Collin Fischer scored four goals and senior pat Collins made 10 saves to lead the MSOE lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over North Central (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Viets Field.

The Raiders (4-0) led by as many as four goals in the game but held off a late charge by the Cardinals (3-2) to secure a fourth-straight win to open the season.

Senior Oliver Winsor also scored two goals while senior Oliver Kennedy, sophomore Harrison Davies, and freshman Quinn Erdmann also scored goals. Seniors Thomas Reid and Clay Gustafson finished with two assists each.

Defensively, Collins was rock solid in goal and sophomore Jacob Killian led a solid defensive effort in front of the cage with five caused turnovers. Senior James Shipp and freshman Jacob Boynewicz caused two turnovers each.

North Central struck first in the game, scoring with 2:45 remaining in the first quarter for the period's lone goal.

Winsor got MSOE on the board at 11:57 of the second quarter with the first of three-straight Raider goals. Fischer followed with back-to-back goals at 10:01 and 5:03 to open a 3-1 lead. The Cardinals answered with a goal at 3:45.

Erdmann then made it 4-2 at 2:37 before NCC pulled back with 4-3 at halftime with another score 41 seconds before the break.

Fisher led a charge out of halftime, scoring 25 seconds into the second half with the first of two-straight man-up goals. He followed suit with another at 10:50 and Winsor made it three goals in a row at 8:07 to pull ahead 7-3.

The teams then traded back-to-back goals each way with Kennedy and Davies re-establishing the four-goal cushion at 9-5 with 1:38 remaining in the third quarter.

The Raiders would need each of those goals as NCC clawed back a goal with 33 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The visitors then made it 9-7 with 12:23 remaining in regulation and pulled within a goal with 1:45 on the clock.

North Central won the ensuing face-off but was forced into a turnover. Once the Red & White cleared the ball, possession never left its attacking zone and the Raiders closed out the game with the possession.

NCC held a 35-25 shot advantage for the match but MSOE led on ground balls 32-31, turnovers 21-23, and caused turnovers 12-8.

The Raiders return to the field Wednesday with the start of MLC play at Beloit. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
