Box Score WAVERLY, Iowa – Junior Trevor Cwiok scored the equalizer to force overtime, but the MSOE men's soccer team come to an end in a penalty kick shootout after playing to a 1-1 draw with No. 16 Wartburg on a snow-filled field Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Raiders (17-4-1) see their season come to an end after their first NCAA Tournament berth, first conference titles since 1986 and a school-record 17 wins. The Knights (12-3-6) advance to Sunday, where they will host Chicago in the second round.
Wartburg scored a goal in the first half and MSOE tallied in the second half for the match's only goals. The teams went to overtime with no winner, sending the game to penalty kicks. Both teams made their first two kicks, with the Andryks, junior Logan and freshman Braden, converting their chances.
After a miss both ways, the Raiders' Brazillians, Silas Linares and Marcelo Alves, each put their side ahead with successful attempts. Each time, however, Wartburg responded. In the sixth round, MSOE saw their try miss the mark and the Knights converted their own to decide the match.
Wartburg had struck first in the match, getting the scoring started in the 34th minute on an unassisted goal from Zach Smith.
MSOE got the goal they needed to stay alive just 40 minutes later on Cwiok's second goal of the season. The defensive midfielder got his head on the end of a Braden Andryk cross to keep the team's hopes alive.
Both teams took 12 shots through regulation, but the home side got the better of the overtime periods with five shots to the Red & White's none. Senior Garrett Farin made five saves in his final collegiate match, finishing his final campaign with a 0.71 GAA, a .845 save percentage, nine shutouts and 17 wins, all school single-season records.
Logan Andryk finished the season with 25 assists this season and likely secured the top spot in the nation this season. He edged St. Scholastica's Sean Morgan, who finished the season with 24 in the game after MSOE's in Waverly. Andryk currently has 11 more assists than the next-highest player that is not from CSS.
